Residential Design & Build Magazine
2009 Design Excellence Awards

Award Category:

Custom Home of More Than 7,000 sq. ft.

Each year, Residential Design and Build Magazine selects homes of outstanding character for recognition of the high level of skills shown by those who designed and built them. For 2009, the newly completed home of Jim & Judy Watson was chosen to receive the award for homes of 7,000 square feet or larger.

Pages 24 - 26 of the July/August issue features this unique home as follows:

"The plan was to design a signature soft contemporary residence to capture the client's desire for cutting-edge technology, simplicity, of elements, environmentally friendly design and most of all to be unique in style yet comfortable and livable. This custom beachfront home is three-stories high plus a gorgeous fourth -level sun deck. This 7,239 sq. ft. home features six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a home theater, gym, wine room, library, game room, spa room, two kitchens, and multiple living rooms. A custom elevator and wrap-around stairs provide vertical access to all levels while skewed floor plans offer an interesting journey through the home within a rectangular boundary.

The objective was to make this home simple yet strikingly interesting and blend new with old. As with most beach-front projects, this site has height limitations, area limits, tight setbacks to maintain along with wind and sun considerations."

Perspectives On Design California
Lighting Design Magazine Article

Perspective on Design California bills itself as a magazine for "creative ideas shared by leading professionals". In a recent article featuring the Lighting Design Alliance, the California home of Jim & Judy Watson was featured on pages 148 - 149.

The article explains how lighting was used to enhance the visual appeal of both the interior and exterior of the residence.

Lights in Back

On Page 148:

"In the day, most things are lit up somewhat evenly, but at night, we can highlight the sequence of vision - how your eyes travel in space - and create a zone of comfort."

On page 149:

"Providing usable light, decorative sconces glow from the underside of the balconies. Inside the home, small aperture flush trim fixtures light furniture and surfaces. From the street view, light from within the garage glows softly through translucent material."
