SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Mayor Judith Valles
and the San Bernardino City council met in front of city hall to
recognize twelve CSUSB art students along with developer Watson & Associates
for their part in “ArtStop,” a public art project in
downtown San Bernardino. This centerpiece project is the first
of a series of activities planned for "A Taste of Downtown".
A Taste of Downtown is sponsored by the Downtown
Area Revitalization Team, and co-sponsored by the city, California
State University San Bernardino and Watson & Associates. A
Taste of Downtown is designed to showcase the various downtown
arts, entertainment and food venues. The project represents just
a portion of $300,000 in funding from Watson & Associates to
the Cal State San Bernardino’s art department that will be
used to support a series of public art projects in the city.
Watson & Associates partners Charles Shumaker,
Chuck Diamond, and Jim and Judy Watson have closely worked with
the university’s art department in developing and financially
supporting the overall vision for the project.
Students were invited to submit designs for 12 24-inch
painted spheres to be permanently installed in various locations
downtown. A jury comprised of the university’s art faculty,
representatives of Watson & Associates and city officials reviewed
the designs and selected 12 finalists. Watson & Associates
provided a $500 commission to each finalist.
"We are grateful to Mr. Watson and his staff,
not only for their generosity in funding these projects, but also
for the insight and imagination they've brought to the city. They
truly see the great potential our city holds," said Mayor
Valles.
