This Grant is for the
manufacture and placement of Public Art Pieces throughout the City
of San Bernardino. Richard Johnston, an internationally recognized public
artist and CSUSB professor, is working with students to create public
art works to adorn parks and public areas. The program is being administered
by Professor Sant Khalsa, Department Chair under the auspices of
the School of Arts and Letters, Professor Eri Yasuhara, Dean. The art
works are fashioned in a variety of media ranging from cortene steel
to ceramics and water features. Art selections will be juried by members
of the art faculty, city officials, Judy Watson, Chuck Diamond, and Charlie
Shumaker of J. R. Watson & Associates Development Corporation. The works are generally site-specific
and being contemplated for the following locations:
- The Shops at University Park (retail center across
from main entrance to CSUSB). Estimated installation
3rd quarter 2006.
- 3 installations in front of University Club building.
- Chancellor's Park (located at entrance to CSUSB
at Kendall and Campus Parkway in San Bernardino).
The 1.7 acre park will incorporate monuments honoring
City Of San Bernardino police and firefighters.
- The Colony. Proposed sculpture to be located
adjacent to the project on a new half acre park near
CSUSB.
- Campus Parkway Entry. Arrival at the University
will be signaled by a large freestanding ceramic
Monument.
- Pine Trails. Proposed sculpture focuses on nature
themes and will be located in a new 2.5 acre park
with a tot lot, trails and benches.
- Regency Community at University Park. Proposed
sculptures will be placed along a six acre strip
of land that will also include jogging trails, exercise
stations and gazebos along a trail that meanders
from the valley floor to a summit 250 feet above.
- "Art Stops". The mayor of San Bernardino has requested that
the students of CSUSB create 20 unique art pieces for placement in
downtown San Bernardino using a 30" concrete sphere as a canvas.
J. R. Watson & Associates Development Corporation has provided a $20,000
grant for improving artwork in this city. The
selections have been juried and the chosen
artistic spheres have been placed in downtown
San Bernardino.
The balance of the grant funds will be used on public art projects
within locations to be selected over the next six months.
